Looking for a Lead Software Engineer to join a pioneering product lab focused on developing innovative AI-driven media products. The role centers on rapidly prototyping and validating new ideas using AI technologies, guiding technical strategy, and growing with the lab as it builds new digital experiences in journalism. The position requires hands-on engineering and leadership to shape emerging media products that reach real users, collaborating closely with cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities
Evaluate technical feasibility of new product ideas and recommend whether to stop, continue, or scale projects. Build early prototypes and experiments using a combination of coding, AI tools, APIs, and existing platforms to quickly gather user insights. Design and develop AI-centric product experiences leveraging language models, agents, and intelligent content retrieval. Make informed architecture and technology choices suitable for different maturity stages of ideas. Collaborate closely with product, design, editorial, engineering, AI, and data teams. Coach engineers temporarily joining the lab to expand their skills and influence. Help establish technical teams and engineering culture as the lab grows, potentially taking on people management in the future.
Qualifications
Proven experience as a software engineer or tech lead building digital and AI-powered products with significant hands-on involvement. Strong expertise in AI model integration, especially with language models, including deploying features like agents or content generation and measuring their quality and costs. Broad technical competencies spanning front-end, back-end, APIs, and data to deliver end-to-end prototypes independently. Familiarity with AI-native development tools like Claude Code or Codex and their practical applications. Demonstrated ability to pragmatically bring products from prototype to production, including the judgement to discontinue efforts based on evidence. Experienced in providing technical leadership and mentoring engineers without formal authority and aspiring to grow into broader leadership. Self-driven in maintaining skills and finding collaboration opportunities. Fluency in English; Norwegian language skills are not required.
