Responsibilities

Perform comprehensive inspections of residential buildings and structures to identify unsafe or unlawful conditions. Enforce building codes and initiate appropriate actions such as condemnation, emergency repair, or demolition. Issue compliance orders, maintain official records, and consult with property owners, contractors, and community representatives. Coordinate inspections and administrative orders with other officials. Assist in procuring and managing demolition vendors. Approve alternative construction materials and methods when appropriate. Conduct damage assessments post-disaster and participate in policy improvement efforts. Prepare necessary reports and participate actively in staff meetings.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent vocational training in construction; experience in construction-related fields preferred but not mandatory. Must obtain relevant certifications within 18 months from recognized code enforcement authorities (e.g., Residential Building Inspector, Property Maintenance Inspector). Valid driver's license required. Strong knowledge of residential construction codes including International Residential Code, property maintenance code, and related regulations. Proficient in interpreting building plans and applying safety and energy standards. Effective communication skills and ability to influence compliance. Computer skills, including Microsoft Office, required. The role demands physical capability to perform inspections under varying environmental conditions and occasional lifting tasks.
